Yemen Telecom Infrastructure Hit in Escalating Saudi-Led Airstrikes

New airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition have targeted telecommunications infrastructure in Yemen's capital and surrounding areas, compounding a growing crisis.

Yemen Telecom Infrastructure Hit in Escalating Saudi-Led Airstrikes

The Saudi-led military coalition conducted a new wave of airstrikes on January 24, hitting multiple locations in and around the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. Reports indicate that communications towers, including one in the Khawlan district and another in Dhamar province, were among the primary targets.

Escalating Attacks and Civilian Impact

These strikes are part of a broader escalation by the coalition, which has carried out dozens of airstrikes across Yemen in the preceding week. The intensified bombing campaign has resulted in over a hundred deaths and hundreds of injuries, with many civilians bearing the brunt of the conflict. A particularly devastating strike on January 21 hit a detention center in Saada, claiming the lives of numerous inmates, including women and children.

The targeting of communication infrastructure raises serious concerns. Yemen is already grappling with a significant internet blackout, exacerbated by a previous coalition attack on a vital undersea internet cable. Critics accuse the coalition of deliberately disrupting communication lines to suppress information about the destruction and humanitarian toll of the war.

International Scrutiny and War Crimes Allegations

The United Nations has previously stated that many actions by the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen could constitute war crimes. In the first three weeks of January alone, the coalition reportedly conducted 839 airstrikes, with a significant number of these strikes aimed at non-military targets. The Yemeni government has urged the international community to take stronger action against the ongoing aggression.

The conflict in Yemen began in January 2015 when the Saudi-led coalition intervened in an attempt to oust the Houthi movement and reinstate the Saudi-backed former president. The ensuing seven-year war has led to tens of thousands of deaths and precipitated one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises.
